Mr. Darren Russell, Principal

Welcome to Centre Mountain Lellum (Lay-Lum) Middle School.  I am so excited to be a part of this new school community.  Our school name was gifted to us by Beecher Bay Nation and Lellum means ‘House’ and ‘The idea of community, where we raise our children’.  Chief Russell Chipps said, ‘To me it means a place of coming together’.  This name means a lot to us and we are doing our best to honour the name by not shortening the name to Lellum, Centre Mountain, or CML. It is so easy to shorten a name or use parts of the name, but we will always be using the full name and we would like our community to do the same. Please help us by using ‘Centre Mountain Lellum’ when referring to our school. We are thankful we were gifted such a beautiful, unique name.

I would like to introduce myself and tell you a little about me.  I began my teaching career at Dunsmuir Jr. High in September 1989.  I worked there for 6 years before heading off for a one-year teacher exchange program in Perth, Australia.  I returned to Dunsmuir Middle School and became the vice-principal in September 2006. Later, I was given the opportunity to take on the role of vice-principal of Belmont Secondary School in January of 2013 before heading back to Dunsmuir as principal in September 2014.  Four years later, I become the principal of Spencer Middle School and as of February 1, 2022, I began my new role as principal of Centre Mountain Lellum Middle School.

We have completed our staffing for the upcoming school year, and we are very fortunate to be welcoming all these amazing people to our school community.  Centre Mountain Lellum staff are dedicated, compassionate people who work hard to build a strong community with a culture that is safe, calm, welcoming.

We are so excited to meet our new students in September 2023. We have students coming from approx. 8 elementary schools and 4 middle schools within our district and we continue to welcome new students from other districts, other provinces and even other countries.  Our name ‘Lellum’ is very meaningful, as the staff and students will come together to form one community.

Communicating with parents is the key to building successful relations.  I encourage parents to stay involved and connect with our staff throughout the year.  Please contact us if you have any questions, ideas or suggestions.

Thank you for your support.

Darren Russell
